The Konstanz Reichspost (Konstanz Imperial Post Office) was constructed in the south-western German city of Konstanz in 1892. Less than 20 years later, the city got hit by an earthquake which left the building severely damaged. Konstanz Reichspost was later rebuilt, however some of the most notable features of the original building were irreversibly lost.
Objectives
In 2011, with the 100 year anniversary of the earthquake approaching, the city decided to create an exhibition commemorating the event. Among the artifacts to be put on display was a visualization of the original Reichspost building. My job was to model this original building in 3D and produce an animated video showcasing some of its key features.
What I did
Based on original photos and architectural blueprints, I produced a 3D visualization of the historical Konstanz Reichspost and rendered several stills and animations requested by the exhibition organizers.
Workflow
Reference material was acquired with the help of the University of Konstanz and the Konstanz city archive. The material included historical photos taken shortly after the building’s opening in 1892, as well as original architectural plans.
I did all the modelling work in Cinema 4D, with most of the textures put together in Photoshop or generated procedurally inside C4D (Substance was not around at the time of this project).
Once the 3D model was finalized, I rendered several animations and stills and brought them into After Effects for final editing and adjustments.
